Speed Limits in Bearsden

When driving in and around Bearsden area there are a number of different speed limits particularly with “Twenty’s Plenty” signs. The maximum speed for these types of roads is 24 mph.

Bearsden has several schools located around the area and you should take note of any signs stating “when lights flash” – 20 mph is the maximum speed allowed while the flashing lights are displayed. These signs are normally flashing at start of school time, lunch times and school time ending. These signs are mandatory even if they are flashing outwith school times – you must obey, as they have a red circle. Only when you pass another speed limit sign can you exceed the 20 mph speed limit, as and when road conditions safely allow.

There is 1 speed camera in the BEARSDEN area:

Drymen Road with a fixed speed camera with a 30 mph speed limit.

Where to Practice between Lessons in Bearsden?

Bearsden and surrounding areas have a good few areas to get private practice with family and friends.

Grampian Way is an excellent road to take a beginner as it has various gradients. Uphill and downhill starts, moving off / stopping, use of speed and gear changing can all be done on this road as its not too busy with other vehicles.

Baillie Drive is good for the Turn in Road and Reverse Park exercise.

Montrose Drive is good for Reverse Park and Turn in Road and Reverse around the left corner exercise.

Campsie Drive is good for Turn in Road, Reverse Park and Reverse round left corner exercise.

As and when your pupil progresses and feels that they have full control of their vehicle, Bearsden is a good area to take them for town driving and forward planning due to how busy the roads can be.

Tips from our Instructors – Bearsden

Station Road next to Bearsden Train Station – there is a high chance that you will encounter a meeting traffic situation as there will be parked vehicles on Station Road during the day, therefore progress with caution and only proceed as and when it is safe to do so without getting on coming traffic to stop.

From Station Road entering into Pendicle Road you will encounter a steep upward climb with very sharp bends, so its important that you keep your vehicle in a lower gear and keep your speed slow enough to deal with the sharp bends while in full control of your vehicle. This is also the case coming from the opposite way from Canniesburn Road.

Bearsden Cross has a yellow grid box which you can enter as long as your exit is clear to proceed, many, many drivers think that you cannot enter this yellow grid box, therefore restricting the number of vehicles that are on Drymen Road, turning right into Roman Road.

Heading from Canniesburn roundabout taking the exit for Milngavie onto MacFarlane Road, you will approach a mini roundabout with a very restricted view of any vehicles that are entering onto the roundabout from your RIGHT hand side. I would strongly recommend that when approaching this roundabout that you approach with caution and reduce your speed to a walking pace and take the roundabout in first gear as most vehicles on your right hand road approach with speed as they get a clear view of the road to their right hand side.
